From its foundation in 1846, Bishop Hatfield's Hall (renamed Hatfield College in 1919) used the undifferenced arms of Bishop Thomas Hatfield - Azure, a chevron Or between three lions rampant argent.  The college only added the motto "Vel Primus Vel Cum Primis".
 
In 1954, the college was informed that it had been using Bishop Hatfield's arms illegally, and it sought a grant of its own from the College of Arms.  An ermine bordure was added to difference the college's arms from the bishop's, and the previously-established motto and a new crest were added.
