Wappen von Sonneberg

Official blazon

Gold ein rot bewehrter, rot gezungter doppelschwänziger schwarzer Löwe, begleitet von zwei achteckigen schwarzen Sternen.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 5, 1934.

Sonneberg received city rights in 1349 from Countess Jutta von Henneberg. In 1353 the city became a possession of the Counts of Meissen and the arms show the lion of Meissen ever since. The two stars are added to distinguish the arms from the arms of Meissen.
