KREKENAVA

County : Panevėžys
Municipality : Panevėžys

Arms (crest) of Krekenava

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 21, 2006.

The three fleur-de-lys symbolize Virgin Mary: the local church is devoted to the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary, and her painting, said to have miraculous powers, is kept there. Also a widely-known feast of Assumption is performed in Krekenava.

The kankles (a typical Lithuanian string instrument) refers to the local traditions of kankles-making.

In 1920 the Krekenava municipality proposed different arms: between two laurel branches a crossed scythe and rake, and a growing crop behind. The project was not confirmed, and in modern times those symbols were rejected as too close to similar Soviet symbolism. So other local specialties were chosen for the arms.
