Hofgeismar was first mentioned as a city around 1220/30, and the oldest seal of the city is known from 1234. It shows a church tower behind a city wall. The secret seal from 1300 shows some architecture around a single wheel. The present arms are based on this seal, in the colours of Mainz. Hofgeismar belonged to Mainz until 1583.
