PRESTONPANS (Community Council)
Area Council : East Lothian
Official blazon
Azure, a representation of a Mercat Cross Argent between a pickaxe and a spade heads downwards in saltire surmounted by an anchor Or in dexter chief, a garb of the Last surmounted by two sickles heads upwards Sable in sinister chief and an escallop Or in base.
Above the Shield is placed a Coronet appropriate to a statutory Community Council, videlicet:- a circlet richly chased from which
are issuant four thistle leaves (one and two halves visible) and four pine cones (two visible) Or.
Origin/meaning
The arms are granted on June 13, 2000.
The arms have taken their pattern from the device on the burgh seal of Prestonpans (the Burgh never officially received arms). Their main feature is a Mercat Cross, obviously a reminder of the famous Mercat Cross of Preston, which is said to be one of the finest of its kind; Preston was a burgh of barony of which Prestonpans formed the eastern part.
In dexter chief the pick-axe and spade recall the former coal-mining industry and the anchor the town's seafaring interests. The crossed sickles and the garb in sinister chief stand for agriculture while the shell in base is a further reminder of maritime connections.
