PUTBUS
State : Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Disctrict (Kreis) : Vorpommern-Rügen (until 2011 Rügen)
Official blazon
Geteilt; oben in Rot, zwischen einem zwölfendigen Hirschgeweih mit Grind, ein silberner Schild darin ein goldbewehrter roter Greifenkopf; unten geschacht von Schwarz und Gold.
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on December 9, 1938.
The oldest known seal (exact date unknown) shows a shield with in the upper part an empty field, and in the lower the chequered field. Behind the shield an eagle as supporter. This is the oldest version of the arms of the Princes of Putbus. In the 19th century the town used the complete arms of the Princes, with in the upper part an eagle. A helmet covers the shield, with as a crest a chequered fan with the eagle. These arms were used until 1938 (see image below), but the helmet and crest were not used very often.
In the present arms the oldest arms of the Princes of Putbus are restored, and in the upper part an antler, for the many deer in the forests, and the small shield were added. The small shield shows the head of the griffin of Pommern (Pommerania) to which the town belonged.
