Wappen von Grabow

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 20, 1991.

Grabow received city rights in the 13th century, the exact date is not known. In 1275 it is first mentioned as a city. The city seals up to the 16th century show the local patron saint, St. George, standing and holding a small shield with a cross. From the mid 16th century onwards the seals showed a star above a crescent.

Seal of Grabow

The oldest known seal of Grabow (1325)

The first arms were granted in April 1858 by Grand-Duke Franz II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and whoed the moon with three stars.

These arms have been in use until September 2, 1940, when the city received new arms. These arms were based on the old seal of the city and showed St. george killing the dragon and holding a banner with a swastika. (I have no image thereof). These arms were abolished in 1945.

In February 1946 the city again started to use the arms with the moon and stars, but now in silver instead of gold as before. In 1991 the old arms were restored.
