Heraldry of the World Civic heraldry of France - Armorial de France |
ROUGÉ
Département : Loire-Atlantique
Origin/meaning
The arms are based on the arms of the Counts of Rougé. The Lords of Rougé adopted a silver cross on red in the 13th century, as a symbol for th ethree members of the family who participated in the crusades. In the 19th century the city adopted the cross, but changed the colour to distinguish the arms from those of the family.
Literature : Froger et Pressensé, 1996; background from Count Aymeric de Rougé.
