Origin/meaning

The County Wittgenstein was a small county located in the present-day German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen around the Wittgenstein Castle. It existed as an independent territory from 1238-1361.

The arms were used by the Counts until 1361 and have been used for the territory ever since. They have been part of the larger arms of later rulers and several town arms in the area.
