Origin/meaning
The arms are canting, showing a crane. The village developed around the castle of the Lords of Kranichfeld and took their name in medieval times. The family became extinct in 1380 and their possessions were inherited by the Counts of Kirchhberg and in 1455 to the Counts of Reuss. The oldest known seal of the city dates from 1650 and shows the crane under a hand with a plam tree coming from a cloud. This seal was adopted as the arms of the city.
