Region (Oblast) : Odessa

Origin/meaning
The arms show two rye sheaves and a staff of Mercury, symbols for trade and agriculture.
The oldest arms of the city date from the 18th century, and simply show the initials of the founder of the city, Alexander Liubomyrs'kyi.
In the 19th century the arms above were introduced with in the upper half the arms of the Podolski province.
There was, however, a second proposal, which was never granted, see below. These arms were designed in 1837 and showed the same symbols as the later arms.
In the 19th century B.Kene proposed new arms for the town, see below. In the first quarter there was the arms of Podolski province. I have no information on the meaning of these arms. The arms were not confirmed.
