Origin/meaning

Marienhafe was one of the largest villages in the Brookmerland. The arms show the eagle of the Tom Brok family. The lower part of the arms show the short buckets derived from the arms of Klaus Störtebeker (= short bucket). Since 1396 Marienhafe was a refuge for the Vitalienbrüder, a religious group, whose leader was Klaus Störtebeker. The anchor symbolises the free access to the harbour under protection of the Tom Brok family.
