Origin/meaning
The arms show a walled city with in the gate the small arms of the Counts of Henneberg. The walled city with five towers was already used on the seals in the 14th century and, according to legend, granted by Emperor Ludwig IV in 1344. At the time the city was a possession of the Bishops of Würzburg and the seal thus showed a bishop in the gate. Only after 1541, when the city became a possession of the Counts of Henneberg, the rooster appeared.
