Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1968.

The arms are taken from the Monastery of Kempten, which owned the major part of the area until 1802. The monastery used these arms since the 15th century. The division of the shield in red and blue is known since the early 14th century. The bust is the bust of Holy Queen Hildegard, who allegedly founded the monastery. The bust was also used by the city of Kempten on seals in the 14th century.

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
