Origin/meaning

Hünfeld received city rights in 1310 from the Abbots of Fulda. The city belonged from 781 until the mid 16^th century to the Fulda Abbey.

The oldest seal dates from the 14^th century and shows an abbot holding a small shield with the cross of Fulda. In the 16^th century the shield was placed in front of the abbot, which was thus used as a supporter. Since the 19^th century only the cross is used as arms for the city. At the same time the black cross in silver for Fulda was replaced by a silver cross in blue to distinguish the two arms.
