Origin/meaning

The shield depicts two of the most prominent Christian symbols: the Cross and the Eucharist. On the (heraldic) right is the Tau Cross, of St.Francis of Assisi (the bishop's Patron Saint), rising from the stem of the banana plant, against the yellow background of the Caribbean Sun. The Tau represents the Cross of Christ, the Christian symbol of triumph through suffering. The banana plant represents the main crop of the Commonwealth of Dominica, his diocese. The other half with the sign PAX (peace) is the symbol for the eucharist.

In Castries the left half was changed, by adding the Caribbean Sea in base.
