The arms were adopted on January 8, 1929.

The chief shows the initials of Emperor Pedro II, who founded Petropolis and after whom the city was named. The base shows the German Imperial eagle, as the first settlers of the area were of German descend. The golden point symbolises the Serra da Estrela, where the city is located.

The shield is flanked by a railroad, as Petrópolis was the first city to have a railroad in Brazil.

The motto 'Altiora Semper Petens' means Always aspiring the highest.
