Origin/meaning

The arms of Kościan have a complicated history. The basic design is the castle, which already appeared, in different shapes, on the seals of the city since the 14th century. In 1881 the, then German, authorities added an eagle on top of the castle, and the arms were shown as silver on red. The eagle remained on the arms until 1945.

Between 1945-1989 the arms were shown in different colours and shapes of the castle, as can be seen below. Only after 1989 the design returned to the medieval seals and the colours were established. However, there have been different images of the arms, but based on the same description.
