Origin/meaning

The red cross in blue refers to the Oldenburger Land region where he was born. The church is the Münster Cathedral, the crosier and balls are symbols for St. Nicholas and refer to his birthplace, Nikolausdorf.

In his arms as bishop of Dresden-Meissen the cross and balls for St. Nicholas remained, the two other quarters are taken from the diocesan arms.
