CHARLES VAN DEN OUWELANT

Born : July 3, 1911
Deceased : August 22, 2003

Bishop of Surigao, 1955-1973

Arms (crest) of Charles van den Ouwelant

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

As common in Philippine episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal arms show a heart for the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, of which the bishop was a member. The star and the word Humilitas refer to St. Carolus Borromeo, the patron saint of the bishop. The base shows the castle ruin in Stein (NL), where the bishop was born.
