Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on December 14, 1979.

The arms show a woman, symbolising Inga fra Varteig, mother of Håkon Håkonsson, who was born in 1204 as the son of King Håkon Sverreson. She plays also a role in the medieval Håkon Håkonssons Saga.
