Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 6, 1974.

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, from 1267, which has been used until the 15th century. The arms probably symbolise the city in the hilly landscape. The current arms are based on the old seals, but during the centuries the base was generally shown as three small hills.

The colours are first known from some rolls of arms from 1730 and 1747, but later images show a golden field. The original colours were restored in 1974.
