KAPPEL AM RHEIN
State : Baden-Württemberg
District (Kreis) : Ortenaukreis (until 1973 Lahr)
Incorporated into : 1974 Kappel-Grafenhausen
German | In Rot zwei schräggekreuzte gestürzte silberne Fische, überdeckt mit einem steigenden silbernen Fisch und beiderseits begleitet von je einem goldenen Ruder. |
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially designed and adopted in 1907.
The arms are based on the (only) known seal of the village, hanging on a document from December 3, 1687. The seal already showed the three fish and the two oars.
The fish are probably salmon, as salmon fishing in the Rhine and Elz has been of great importance for the village. Already in 1442 a fishermen's guild was founded, which existed until the late 18th century. Fishing remained the most important economic activity until the middle of the 19th century.
The colours were chosen arbitrarily, as no historical colours were known, but are the colours of the State of Baden and were designed by the State Archives of Baden in 1907.
The triple fish has also been used for centuries as a symbol for the Holy Trinity, see f.e. here.
