The sun and the fish denote the well-being and industry of the Burgh; the gold and black colours of the latter were chosen purely for artistic reasons. The Latin motto (see also [[Berwick-Upon-Tweed_(Borough)|Berwick-upon-Tweed]])-"Glory is the reward of victory" - comes from the ancient seal.
