Official blazon
Gules, Saint Duthacus in long garments Argent, holding in his dexter hand a staff garnished with ivy, in the sinister laid on his breast a book expanded Proper.
The Motto in an Escrol "St. Beatus est Duthacus".
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1673
The arms show in red and silver, the colours of the ancient Earldom of Ross, St. Duthac(us). He is supposedly born in Tain around 1000 died at Armagh in Ireland in 1065. His relics were brought back to Tain in 1253 and his shrine became a famous place of pilgrimage to which many people, including kings, came. St. Duthacus is vested as a bishop, which according to tradition he was, and his long garments may refer to his shirt which was a celebrated relic at Tain.
The motto is not listed in the original grant, but has been used since the 17th century. The coronaet and motto were added to the register in 1949.
The old seal from Tain. |
Tain Community Council
