Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on November 25, 1960.
Pinneberg was first mentioned in 1351 as a village with a castle. The castle was the seat of a line of the Counts of Schaumburg, who named themselves after Pinenberg. The castle, which became a ruin in 1640 and was destroyed in 1720, is shown in the arms.
The town started to grow rapidly after the railroad was built in the middle of the 19th century. In 1875 it became a city. The arms were first granted on November 20, 1900 and show the castle and two stars of unknown origin or meaning. The wavy base symbolises the Elbe river. Until 1900 Pinneberg used the arms of the Counts of Schaumburg (a nettle-leave) as its arms. The arms were slightly changed in 1960, changing the base into a wavy silver bar.
