The arms are based on the old arms of Schalksmühle (see below) and Hülscheid. The water-mill wheel is derived from Schalksmühle (Mühle, or mill, making it a canting symbol), and the ivy (Hüls) for Hülscheid. The chequered bar is derived from the arms of the Counts of the Mark, as the area historically belonged to the [[County of Mark]].
