BESTWIG

State : Nordrhein-Westfalen
District (Kreis) : Hochsauerlandkreis (until 1975 Meschede)
Amt : Amt Bestwig (until 1975)
Additions: 1975 Heringhausen, Nuttlar, Ostwig, Ramsbeck, Velmede

Wappen von Bestwig/Arms (crest) of Bestwig
Official blazon
German In Silber ein blaues Andreaskreuz.
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on February 25, 1977.

The arms show a St. Andrew's cross, as St. Andrew is the patron saint of the church in Velmede. Historically the Velmede parish encompassed most of the present municipality. The silver and blue colours are derived from the arms of the County of Arnsberg, to which the area historically belonged.
