Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The ermine chevron and the golden roundels have been taken from the arms of an Irish Watters family and thus symbolise the family name of the bishop. The trefoils indicate his irish origin, the cross his position as a Christian prelate. The cross and the colour purple are arso taken from the arms of Mathias Loras, after whom the bishop was named.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
