Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on November 10, 1819, in new colours on February 2, 1843 and with supporters on March 1, 1988.
The arms show a castle with in the gate the arms of the medieval Lords of Oudenburg. The castle (Burcht) is a canting element. The castle already appeared on the oldest seal of the city, dating from 1226. All later seals showed a castle, but the size and shape of the castle has changed considerably during the centuries. The small shield appeared for the first time in the 16th century.
The arms were initially granted in the Dutch national colours, as the municipality did not provide any coloured image to the Dutch College of Arms. After the Belgian independence, the colours were changed to the historical colours.
In 1988 the supporter from the old arms of Roksem was added as well as an image of saint Arnolus, founder of the Oudenburg Abbey. As the city was one of the oldest in Flanders, a mural crown was added.
