Origin/meaning
The winged lion is the symbol of St. Mark, the patron saint of the bishop. The waves in the old arms refer to the Rhein river and Godas the source of life.
In the new arms the first and fourth quarter show the arms of the Archdiocese of Paderborn and the Diocese of Mainz respectively. The waves and the lion remained. The waves now also symbolise the Pader river.
