Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on September 4, 1835 and again on March 14, 1972.
The arms show in the lower half the lion of Bohemia behind a city wall. This composition is known from the oldest seal of the Altstadt Erlangen (old city) cince 1397. The city was a possession of the Kings of Bohemia at the time.
The upper part shows two eagles. The eagles are the red eagle of Brandenburg and the black eagle of Preussen (Prussia). The two eagles formed the arms of the Neustadt Erlangen (new city). The red eagle bears the small shield of the Hohenzollern dynasty, Margraves of Nürnberg. The letters ES on the left eagle are the initials of Elisabeth Sophie, wife of Margrave Christian Ernst of Nürnberg and Princess of Preussen.
