' CHARLES DANIEL WHITE 'Born: January 5, 1879
Deceased: September 25, 1955

Bishop of Spokane, 1927-1955

Arms (crest) of Charles Daniel White
Official blazon
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The field is the same as that of the Borromeo arms and thus represents St. Charles Borromeo. For Daniel, Prophet - the Bishop’s middle name - there is aligned the heads of three lions (lions are the prophet’s heraldic attribute, and are engaged here in honor of the Holy Trinity).

The carpenter’s square is used as a symbol of St. Joseph (St. Joseph’s Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan). It is also a symbol of justice and truth, because it is an instrument used by all artisans (of whom St. Joseph is also patron).

The lion heads and the chevron are in silver (white) as a canting element.
