Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The clasped hands in the chief symbolize the surname Frey which means "freedom" in German. The clasped hands signify the brotherhood of men in the fatherhood of God. They further represent the bishops desire to serve.

The rose represents the maiden name (DeRose) of the Bishop's mother. The six pointed star is derived from the coat of arms of St. Pius X who established the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine which Bishop Frey promoted in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The sun is based on the arms of a (non related) Frey family from the Alsace region in France.
