Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on April 25, 1980.
The arms are based on the 17th century of the Kortemark Ambacht. The seal and the arms show the arms of Oud-Vlaanderen (Old Flanders), with in the chief a lion. The lion is the newer arms of Vlaanderen. The combination of the old and new arms is probably taken from the symbols of the older Land van Wijnendale, to which Kortenaken belonged since 1281.
On November 10, 1819 the village already received the same arms, but the lion on these arms was facing left. On February 14, 1842 the arms were corrected, with the lion facing right as in the present arms. However, in both former arms the lion was completely black. In 1980 this was corrected by colouring the tongue and nails of the lion red.
