MIDLETON

County : Cork

Arms (crest) of Midleton

Official blazon

Gules a saltire compony countercompony argent and sable between in chief a garb of barley and in base a pot still or; two spearheads erect in fess of the second. Motto : Labore et honore.

Origin/meaning

Midleton adopted a coat of arms on 8th July 1986.

The sheaf of corn at the top of the shield is for agriculture. The still at the bottom is for the town's whisky industry. The spearheads are derived from the seal of the old borough of Midleton, abolished in 1840. These charges are all arranged around a black and white saltire. This refers to the arms of the Cistercian Order and the Fitzgerald and Barry families. The two families founded a cistercian monastery at Midleton in 1180.
