Arms: Or, a griffin segreant coward Azure, armed and langued Gules Crest: A demi-griffin issuant Azure, armed and langued Gules, holding a tulip slipped and leaved proper Motto: RESPICE FINEM (Regard the end).
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on April 3, 1961, but were used since 1960.
The blue griffin is allegedly found on the family arms of the Bok family - after Mr WE Bok (State secretary of the South African Republic between 1881 and 1889) after whom the town was named - in the Netherlands, to whom reference is also made in the tulip in the crest. This, however, could not be confirmed by either the late Dr Cor Pama or Mr S Piennar, both of whom were experts in South African municipal heraldry.
In 2000 the old Boksburg municipality was abolished and the Boksburg Transitional Council was created. Even though later in the year this council was also abandoned and incorporated into Ekurhuleni, the Boksburg Transitional Council was granted arms on February 16, 2000.
