BANK OF MONTREAL
Official blazon
Arms: Argent a saltire Gules between in chief a rose of the last barbed, seeded, leaved and slipped in base a beaver to the sinister and in fess a thistle leaved and slipped and a sprig of shamrock proper a bordure per pale Sable and Vert
Crest: Upon a log of maple fesswise sprouting a beaver proper
Supporters: Upon a grassy mound on either side a North American Indian to the dexter in full dress holding in the exterior hand a calumet and raising the other hand to the forehead the sinister in hunting dress holding in the exterior hand a bow all proper
Motto: CONCORDIA SALUS
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on April 21, 1934 (London) and confirmed on November 16, 1992 (Canada).
The arms show symbols for Scotland (thistle), England (rose), Ireland (clover/shamrock) and Canada (beaver). With Canadian supporters and crest.
The design is (much) older as 1934 and showed the two supporters sitting, as seen on an image on the Bank's main building. As this was not acceptable, the bank received the above arms in 1934.
The motto is that of the city of Montreal.Literature:
