Origin/meaning
The arms are known since 1577 in either black and silver, or red and silver. The arms are those of the oldest Lords of Battenberg.
The seals of the town always have shown different images. Initially the arms showed a tower and the figures of the Count of Battenberg and the Archbishop of Mainz, who both ruled the city. When Mainz acquired the full rights in 1291 the seals showed either the bishop alone and after that more often only the wheel of the State of Mainz.
In 1925 Hupp misinterpreted the situation and mentioned the wheel as the arms of the city, see image below.
