Origin/meaning
Saulgau was already a city in the 13th century. The oldest seal is known since 1273 and already shows a shield with the lion and a canting pillar (Säule). The lion most likely is the lion of Habsburg, as this family ruled the city at the time. The oldest coloured image dates from 1483. In 1923 the city added a green hill in the base of the shield, but this was later removed again.
