Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1956.

The seals of the city of Elze historically showed two saints facing each other, both sitting on a throne. These are the patron saints of Elze, St. Paul, holding a sword, and St. Peter, holding a key. In the above arms the saints are combined with the older arms of Elze. The previous arms of Elze were granted on January 12, 1939. These arms were derived from the medieval arms of the Lords of Elze. The oldest use of these arms by the family dates from the 13th century. As no historical colours were known, the colours were chosen arbitrarily.

Before 1938 the arms of Elze were always based on the old seal, see images below.
