Official blazon

In gespaltenem Schild vorne in Gold ein roter Schrägbalken, hinten in Schwarz ein rot bewehrter und rot bezungter goldener Adler.

Origin/meaning

The arms are a combination of the arms of Baden (right) and the imperial eagle. The arms were granted in 1958.

The city has a complicated history. It was granted city rights in 1290 by the counts of Baden, who got the village in 1227 as a vassal of the German Emperor. In 1462 the city was transferred to the Pfalz, in 1803 it again became part of Baden. The oldest seal, dating from the end of the 14th century only shows the arms of Baden. All later seals only show the arms of Baden, also when the city was part of the Pfalz. The eagle was added in 1958 to symbolise the oldest ownership of the city.
