District (Kreis) : Ansbach (until 1973 Dinkelsbühl)
Additions : 1971 Altentrüdingen, Reichenbach, Schobdach; 1972 Obermögersheim; 1978 Fürnheim, Geilsheim
Official blazon
Geviert; 1 und 4: in Rot eine vierfüßige goldene Truhe mit Pultdeckel und Schlossblech, 2 und 3: wieder geviert, 2 von Schwarz und Silber, 3 von Silber und Schwarz
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on October 25, 1938.
The arms are a combination of the arms of the Hohenzollern family and a canting symbol (Truhe was supposed to mean chest). The town became a possession of the Margraves of Nürnberg, who originated from the Hohenzollern family in 1371. The quartered shield is known since 1387, but was replaced by a single chest from the 16th to the 19th century. The chest has been depicted in many forms, sometimes more like a bench, see image below. In 1938 the present arms were granted, which were based on the old seal.
