Origin/meaning

The arms were officially adopted in 1953.

The arms show a pear tree, which is derived from the name of the mountain close to Oberwil, the Holzbirliberg. The name is explained as Holz-Birnen-Berg or wood-pear-mountain. Thus the arms can be considered canting.

In 1914 Walter Merz proposed the use of the arms of the Von Wile family, who originated from the village, as arms for Oberwil. These arms were in red a silver bar. The municipality did not adopt this proposal, but the arms appeared in the Coffee Hag albums.
