Armoiries de Provins

Official blazon

D'azur à la Tour César couverte d'argent, maçonnée et ajourée de sable, surmontée d'une fleur de lis d'or; à la porte d'argent chargée d'un lion de sable.

Origin/meaning

The castle represented on the coat of arms is the Tour César in Provins. The Fleur de Lys (and also lion rempants) represents the parentage to the King of France, since Thibault de Champagne, duke of France, was the cousin of the King of France -Philippe Le Bel. He was a well known poet. The famous rose of Provins was the very first rose brought back from Palestine on one of the crusades. This rose is the ancestor of most European cultivated roses, and also appears on local heraldry.
