Origin/meaning

Neustadt was part of the County of Henneberg until 1353, when is became a possession of the Counts of Meissen (later Sachsen-Meissen). The oldest known seal dates from around 1360 and shows the lion of Meissen. These arms remained unchanged until the second half of the 17th century and were restored in 1890.

In 1962 the arms were formally granted. Between the end of the 17th century and 1890 the arms were divided, showing in the upper half the lion and in the lower three roses. The lion was also sometimes shown as the striped lion of Thüringen instead of the black lion.
