Origin/meaningThe new arms were approved by the city council on January 22, 2020. The arms show the lion of the County Schwarzburg (later Principalities of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and Schwarzburg-Sondershausen), to which most of the area historically belonged. The 10 flowers symbolise the 10 villages in the municipality. The small shield shows the Schwarza river in the upper half and a generic blue wavy bend for the many other rivers in the municipality. The previous arms of the city of Großbreitenbach: The arms are based on the 16th century seal of the town. The savage most likely is derived from the arms of the counts of Schwarzburg, who used a savage as supporter and who ruled the town at the time. The savage holds a complicated lock and keys. The lock was supposedly used on a fence on the main road through the village, to protect the town. The lock still exists in the town hall. The mountain in the base symbolises the mountains in the area. The herbs on the mountain symbolise the herb gathering practised in the area.
