Origin/meaning
Ettenheim belonged from 1100-1803 to the State of Strasbourg (Strassburg), and the Bishop of Strasbourg granted the city rights in the 13th century. The oldest seal dates from the early 14th century and shows already a walled church. The seal probably shows a representation of the heavily walled centre of the city (destroyed in 1637). Later seals show the same church, but flanked by moon and crescent. Since 1545 the composition has been placed on a shield and used as arms. The colours are the colours of Strasbourg.
The seals of the city:
The arms in the Wappen-Sammlung (+/- 1910) |
The arms by Hupp in the Kaffee Hag albums +/- 1925 |
Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
