Origin/meaning
The arms show in the upper part the patron saint of the city, St. John. Until the 16th century the saint appeared in seals only from the waist upwards, since the 16th century standing. The lower part shows the arms of Franken (Franconia) the part of Bayern in which the city is situated. The arms are used as such since 1946.
Hupp showed in the 1920s still the image of the saint as a whole, see below.
