Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on August 16, 1844.

The arms are based on the medieval seals of the city, which showed a castle and the arms of the Dukes of Brabant-Limburg. The oldest seal with the arms dates from 1360. The arms may be designed in 1355 when the city rights were granted by Duchess Johanna of Brabant-Limburg.

Different arms were mentioned in a 17th century manuscript; these were the arms of the family (de) Hannut according to the Rietstap Armorial.
